DIS was involved in the development of the system and contributed with a number of new features along with maintenance and hosting of the system. A variety of technologies and languages have been used during the project, including web services, Visual Studio/C#, Eclipse/Java, etc.
Green Waves creates optimum working conditions for emergency vehicles and staff without endangering other drivers and pedestrians. Part of the development process was executed from DIS’ offices.
Using GPS, information about the position, speed, direction and destination of the vehicle is sent by General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) to a server, which calculates the optimal route by means of algorithms. As the vehicle approaches, the server sends a signal to the control boxes on the traffic lights involved, telling them to turn green in the direction of the approaching vehicle and red in all other directions.
Ambulances, fire engines and police cars thereby have the optimum driving conditions during emergency responses.
